Will shooting a gun directly over a horse’s head make him go deaf or is this just an old wives tale?
Before some people get all jumpy, it’s just a question. I’m asking on here instead of testing it on my horse. Thanks
Mulereiner, that auction sounds like something I’d like to see! It makes alot of sense.
Revwar-my horses are gun-broke. I shoot off their backs quite a bit. I’ve only shot off to the sides, though, and never over their head. Don’t need a trainer. Thanks for your time, though.
Repeated exposure to gun fire will cause some hearing loss. But one shot doesn’t usually cause it – it is years of exposure that do the trick.
If you are shooting for mounted western shooting, the horse may get some hearing loss, but nothing too noticable. The ones I have experienced have been due to rifle or shotgun fire used during repeated years of hunting. Usually it is one sided also, but then again, I have never seen anyone rest the barrel in between the horses ears and fire. There is too much trouble with the horse jerking his head when the gun fires.
